KWHA confirms Taiye Eleja as KWSIEC boss, passes Kwara United Magt. Corporation Bill

Date: 2019-05-25

The Kwara State House of Assembly on Friday confirmed Alhaji Taiye Banu Eleja as the chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC).

This is coming two days after the lawmakers stood down his confirmation due to his non-appearance on the Floor of the House for screening.

But the Assembly on Friday reconsidered his nomination and confirmed his appointment after several members of the House described his nomination as "a round peg in a round hole" in both character and requisite experience and urged the House to confirm his nomination.

The State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, had last week forwarded names of chairmen and members of three statutory commissions in the state to the state Assembly for confirmation. The statutory commissions are KWSIEC, Kwara State Civil Service Commission and the State Fiscal Responsibility Commission.

Accordingly, on Wednesday, the House confirmed Alhaji Sakariyyah Onimago as Chairman of State Civil Service Commission and Mr Lukman Owolewa as Chairman of the State Fiscal Responsibility Commision.

Meanwhile, the House has also passed into law the Kwara United Football Management Bill 2019.

Under the new law, Kwara United is now has separate management Corporation and Board to ensure effective management of the club's affairs.

The law equally established a board consisting of chairman and other members with a tenure of 4 years and can be renewed by the State Governor.

It also provides means through which the football club could be funded as it hitherto relied on executive approval for its funding.

This according to the law can be through budgeting allocation and partnership with sporting agencies and marketers.

The chairman of the Board must now be a seasoned footballer, while the Executive Secretary must be from the State Ministry of Youths and Sports.

The Speaker, Dr Ali Ahmad while speaking, said the Bill was long overdue and expressed confidence, that with the passage of the bill, the club would have improved performance in the nation's premier league.
