JAMB splashes N125 million on ABU, UniIlorin, others for admission best practices

The Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has awarded the sum of N125 million to some Nigerian universities and polytechnics for their outstanding adherence to international best practices in their admissions process.

Speaking at the presentation of the awards on Thursday in Abuja, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said the National Tertiary Admissions' Performance -Merit Award, "is geared towards encouraging other institutions to do what is right."

Oloyede said the award would encourage healthy competition among tertiary institutions across the country for global best practices.

The JAMB boss while highlighting the criteria for the awards, said the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria clinched the prize (of N25 million) for the "most national institution in terms of admission spread", while the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, went away with the sum of N25 million for the "most subscribed institution by candidates.Other institutions that won other coveted prizes include: the University of Maiduguri, Rivers State University, Port-Harcourt, Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna. They institutions all got the sum of N25 million each for their performance in keeping to the rules of the examination body over admission of UTME candidates.

In the same vein, the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, who was represented by Mrs Mariam Uwais, lauded JAMB for its yearly remittance to the federation account.

Osinbajo reiterated the federal government's determination to tackle corruption in the country.On his part, the outgoing Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, showered encomia on the JAMB Registrar, for bringing transparency and integrity into the operations of the examination body.
