Ohan Bridge Failing Again

Date: 2012-09-24

Commuters have raised alarm over the failed section of Ohan Bridge along Ilorin/Igbeti Road in Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State.

They called for urgent repair of the failed portion of the Bridge, warning that the total collapse of the bridge was imminent unless something urgent if carried out.

The bridge was repaired a few months ago by the Kwara state government in collaboration with the Nigeria Army, Sobi Cantonment Ilorin.

A traveler, who simply identified himself as Tolagbe told newsmen at the weekend that the situation of the bridge poses great threat to road users.

He said government must take proactive measure before the bridge is grounded.

The traveler, who identified the bridge as very strategic, appealed to the relevant authorities to rehabilitate the bridge with a view to easing vehicular movement.

A member of the state working committee of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), who wouldn't want his name in print, wondered why the bridge, which was opened for use few months ago, could damage soon.

He also averred that the condition of the bridge signals danger to the looming loss of lives and valuables.

He also warned that the hoodlums may take the advantage of the damaged bridge to swoop on unsuspected travelers.

When The Herald visited the spot yesterday, motorists had hectic time in passing through the bridge, thanks to the palliative measure by some unidentified motorists.

The Herald recalls that the state commissioner for Works and Transport, Dr. Abubakar  Amuda-Kannike last Monday assessed the level of damages on the bridge during his visit to Ilesha/Gwanara Road.
