Akanbi urges Osinbajo, Zuma to stop xenophobic attacks

Date: 2017-02-26

A former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mustapha Akanbi (retd.), has called on the governments of Nigeria and the South Africa to holistically address the attacks on Nigerians by some South Africans.

He noted that the attacks on Nigerians by South Africans were uncalled for.

He spoke on Saturday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, when the Chief Executive Officer of the National Library, Prof. Lenrie Aina, who was represented by the Head of National library in Kwara, Mrs. Bimpe Olani, donated a set of computer and collection of books to the Mustapha Akanbi Library.

Akanbi, who is a former Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission, said the South African government must realise that Nigeria and other African nations that are part of the Africa Union should be treated as one big family.

He emphasised that the South African government had the responsibility to protect the lives and property of every person living in South Africa not to talk of citizens of the AU.

Akanbi said, "The xenophobia is uncalled for and it has to be addressed accordingly." He also advised Federal Government to make Nigeria more conducive for living, working and doing business so that Nigerians would not be travelling abroad.

He urged the government to address corruption and fight kidnapping and other anti-social behaviours as well as encourage citizens by making Nigeria a proud country to live in.

Akanbi said, "Nigerians should know that the xenophobic attacks clearly showed that there is no place like home.

"No matter how habitable other countries appears, home is very important. I urge them to comport themselves and be good ambassadors of the country by doing what is right at all times."
