1,000 farmers benefit 'Kwara Go VEG' initiative

In a bid to encourage agric productions, the Kwara State government has commenced a programme, 'Kwara Go VEG' with the target of exposing farmers to profitability in vegetable crops production.

Speaking during the event, the state Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, said the initiative is to increase farmers productivity, income and develop the value chains of crops.

The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner of Information and Communication, Alhaji Mahmud Ajeigbe, will in turn provide raw materials for our industries, promote food security and create employment for the youths.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture and Rural Water Support Services, Anu Ibiwoye said, "the initiative is aimed at sensitising farmers on the untapped money making potential on vegetable farming.

He stressed that it is aimed at building the capacity of vegetable farmers in the state to increase their productivity and profitability.

"We are linking farmers to the available export windows for vegetable produce and also empowering them to cultivate a minimum of 1,600 acres of ugwu leaf, bitter leaf, cucumber, pepper and other vegetables.

"The project is also aimed at identifying and revealing the numerous opportunities available to every actor in the vegetable value chain to enable Kwara farmers build their capacity through training in collaboration with research institutes.

The governor's aide noted that this will also enhance their standard of living through collaborative empowerment scheme.

Ibiwoye reiterated that the initiative will ensure that vegetable farmers are empowered through distribution of seedlings, liquid fertilisers among others and are encouraged to expand their productivity level.
