Two jailed for stealing a cow
Two persons, including a 25-year-old commercial motor driver, Kayode Adetunji of Garika, Jabba, Kwara State, have been sentenced to six months imprisonment for stealing a cow.
Adetunji and Aliu Abubakar, 26 of Tsaragi, via Share were sentenced to the jail term by an llorin Magistrate Court.
Prior to their conviction, the prosecutor, Sergeant Bilikisu Adu, applied for their summary trial since they had admitted to the commission of the offences.
The trial magistrate, Mrs. K.A. Yahaya, granted the oral application of the prosecutor and convicted them of the offences of criminal conspiracy and theft.
Consequently, the court sentenced the convicts to three months imprisonment without an option of fine for the offence of criminal conspiracy and another three months without option of fine for the offence of theft.
The court however held that the terms should run concurrently and that the convicts would serve their jail term at the Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala, llorin.
The convicts, along with two other persons now at large had on July 19, 2012 invaded the camp of one Garba Haruna at Pako Fulani Camp, via Jebba and stole his cow valued at N120,000.
Luck ran out on the accused when the owner of the cow realised that his cow had been stolen and mobilised his neighbours who went after the suspects but to no avail. He later passed information to the vigilante men on patrol along the highway.
Consequently, four suspects were intercepted with the stolen cow in a Nissan bus with registration number KWARA XA 613 ARP along Jebba/Bode Sa'adu road. The convicts were arrested while the other two escaped into the bush.
Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that the recovered cow has been identified by the owner as his stolen cow.
The FIR added that the offences contravene Sections 97 and 287 of Penal Code, law of the Federation of Nigeria.
