A new speed limit monitor has been successfully designed by the University of Ilorin and now due for unveiling.

The device, an invention of Faculty of Engineering of the University, is to be showcased to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) soon. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, disclosed this at the commissioning of a $2million Engineering Research Centre at the main campus of the university. He said the institution has broken new grounds in the areas of research and community service.

"For instance, one of our staff in the faculty of engineering has helped to develop a chemical device for cleaning oil spillage in the Niger Delta region and the university has been commissioned by the federal government to help solve the problem of oil spillage in the region.

"These are some of the solutions provided to various challenges emerging from the Faculty of Engineering of this University. I have a strong believe that if we are challenged, the university through the faculty can deliver", Ambali said. The Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor Y.A. Jimoh, said the faculty was ranked the best in Africa in 2015 based on the publications of its staff, a feat which he observed, could not have been possible without tangible research efforts.

"In compiling the list of equipment, we considered the major operation of our donor and also took notice of the high technology facilities and state-of-the –art equipment already available within the Faculty and the University, especially the University of Ilorin Central Research Laboratory".
