Dr Muftau Yahaya advocates stoppage of joint account system

Date: 2012-07-11

Dr Muftau Yahaya, the Chairman of Asa Local Government Area in Kwara State, on Thursday, called on the Federal Government to put an end to the state and local government joint account system.

The chairman told journalists in Ilorin that the system had prevented council chairmen from performing effectively.

He said that governance would be impossible at the grassroots if the trend continued, adding that the local governments were expected to make positive impacts on the masses.

"The Joint Account system, as allowed by the constitution, is responsible for the non-performance of local government and we shall continue to see more if we do not change it.

"State governments have no responsibility controlling the allocation of local governments because it is the local government that is best positioned to determine the priority needs of the people," he said.

Yahaya said that state governments had always taken the glory on any successful project funded under joint account system.
