Bailiffs ready to serve Saraki, Ekweremadu personally

Date: 2016-06-21

The court process to compel the attendance of the Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, to their trial before the FCT High Court in Jabi, Abuja is now with the court bailiffs who will serve them the summons personally, Daily Trust gathered yesterday.

Saraki, Ekweremadu, the Deputy Senate President, a former clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa and his deputy, Mr. Bennedicta Efeturi, are facing a joint trial over alleged criminal conspiracy and forgery.

They are alleged to have forged the Senate Standing Rules 2015 which produced the current leadership at the senate. A source close to the Jabi court told Daily Trust that they must be served personally, but added that none of them had yet been served the court summon.

Sources close to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice , Alhaji Abubakar Mallami (SAN) said once they were aware of the pending charges against them, they should come to the court and submit themselves.

The source, who does not want his name in print, said the accused persons were avoiding service, adding that there was a procedure for service on the National Assembly (NASS). He said if that failed, the names of the accused persons might be published in newspapers or the court processes may be pasted at the National Assembly premises.

Reacting to allegations of bias by the AGF in the case, he said the AGF does not investigate crime but only prosecutes crimes under Section 174 of the constitution.
