Electricity tariff; NLC, TUC protest in Kwara

Date: 2016-02-09

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Kwara on Monday embarked on protest against the recent increase in electricity tariff by the Federal Government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the protest, led by the Kwara NLC and TUC Chairmen, Alhaji Abdul-Yekini Agunbiade and Mr Kolawole Olumoh, was attended by hundreds of civil servants and other residents of the state.

NAN reports that the protest, which began at the Baboko, Ilorin office of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, lasted several hours and featured solidarity songs condemning the tariff increase.

Addressing the protesters, the NLC Chairman said that the increase was "illegal and uncalled for" and urged for dialogue between the Federal government and the stakeholders.

Agunbiade said that the electricity tariff increase was not in the interest of the masses but to protect the investments of a few select Nigerians.

In his own remark, the TUC Chairman said there has not been any remarkable improvement in service delivery to justify the new increase and called on the Federal Government to find a lasting solution to the epileptic power supply in the country. (NAN)
