Kwara to commission new revenue collection base

Date: 2016-02-08

The Kwara State Government is set to commission the headquarters of the State Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS) later on Monday.

Governor Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed will preside over the event.

He is also expected to flag off the Kwara State Residents Identification Number (KRIN), which will allow access to government services and serve as an additional source of identity.

Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Media and Communications, Muyideen Akorede, confirmed the plans.

He said traditional rulers, officials of labour unions, artisans and representatives of market associations would attend.

Akorede added that the commissioning of the Revenue House would follow the opening of the four revenue courts established by the state government to prosecute tax evaders and defaulters.

He acknowledged the presence of the revenue courts was to ensure compliance with laws relating to tax administration in the state. "Any individual or business in the state that fails to comply with provisions of the law will be prosecuted accordingly by the KWIRS."

Akorede explained the establishment of the revenue service was one of the concrete steps to lessen dependence on federation allocation that has declined in the face of persistent drops in global oil prices.
