Hijab: Group alleges harassment of Muslim women, appeals to Buhari
An Islamic organisation, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG), has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to take measures to stop harassment of women in hijab.
In a statement in Ilorin, Kwara State, the coordinator of the group, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdulahi, alleged that harassment of women wearing hijab had been spreading across states of the federation.
"Following President Muhammad Buhari's comment on wearing of hijab during the presidential media chat recently, some unpatriotic Nigerians have started harassing Muslim women in some parts of the country," the statement said. It said there were reports of soldiers stripping women of their hijab in Lagos and denial of Muslim nurses and patients at a hospital in the city the right to dress modestly and Islamically.
In Ibadan, Oyo State, the statement added, there were reports also of a Federal Government agency forcing Muslim women wanting to obtain its services to remove their hijab before they could be allowed into its offices. The MMWG, therefore, called on the president to warn the general public to desist from threatening the public peace.
