Kwara teachers suspend planned strike
Kwara State branch of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has called on its members to stay action on the strike which was supposed to commence on Dec.1 and await further directives.
The call was contained in a statement by the state chairman of the union, Alhaji Musa Abubakar and secretary, Alhaji Idris Ola, in Ilorin yesterday.
Daily Trust gathered that the development followed a meeting convened by the state governor, Alhaji Abdulfattah Ahmed, at the weekend with leadership of the union.
The state branch of NUT last week threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if the government failed to pay their three months salaries.
But the state chairman of the Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ALGON) Alhaji Lateef Okandeji, in his reaction to the threat appealed to the teachers for understanding .
He attributed the development to drop in federal allocations to the state and councils, assuring that they would be paid as soon as the next allocation was received.
On Friday, a peace meeting was convened by Governor Ahmed with the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Alhaji Sola Gold, Chief of Staff to the governor, Alhaji Abdulwahab Babatunde, Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Media and Communications, Dr. Muideen Akorede and Permanent Secretary, State Universal Basic Board(SUBEB) Dr. A. Dasuki, in attendance.
The NUT representatives at the meeting were led by their chairman, Alhaji Musa Abubakar and secretary, Alhaji Idris Ola.
?The governor was said to have assured the NUT that he would source funds for the payment and appealed to the teachers to remain calm.
"In view of the governor's intervention, we appeal to our members to stay action and wait for further directives on the issue," the NUT said in the statement.
The union also urged the governor to expedite action on the matter.
