Kwara Assembly to intervene in colleges of education crisis

Date: 2015-11-12

Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Dr. Ali Ahmad, has pledged to intervene in the on-going crisis at the state colleges of education which led to lecturers of the affected institutions embarking on industrial strike about a month ago.

He equally appealed to the affected students to maintain calm while the House takes necessary steps to resolve the matter amicably. Ahmad, while addressing the students who staged a protest to the House of Assembly complex on Tuesday, said they will not relent in their commitment towards ensuring qualitative education in the state.

The students had sought reduction in their school fees, improvement of infrastructure, payment of bursary and prompt payment of lecturers' salaries. While appreciating the students for their peaceful conduct, the lawmaker noted that they are in the right place and that their agitations would be taken care of.

He said: "I am here as the Speaker because I have education. If I give you a million naira you will spend it in no time. Therefore, the only thing we can bequeath to you is proper education which is everlasting".

He assured the students that he would meet with the authorities to ensure that the issues raised are attended to. Lecturers of the state colleges of education under the auspices of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) recently embarked on industrial action to press home their demands.
