Teaching, not for everybody - Council

Date: 2015-06-08

Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Professor Addison Wokocha has warned teachers in the country to abide by the code of practice guiding the profession.

He said teaching will no longer be an "all-comers affair", hence the introduction of a regulatory mechanism.

Wokocha spoke at the weekend during the induction of 71 College of Education graduates of Kwara State University, Malate.

The Registrar, who was represented by a Director in the council, Alhaji Dahiru Romi, said Teachers' Investigation Panel and Teachers' Tribunal had been put in place to try erring teachers.

He urged the newly inducted graduates to be mindful of the existence of the panel and tribunal, saying the oath they took was not a mere ritual, but a serious undertaking.

The Registrar said the council was poised to emulate global best practices and enviable standard to protect the profession from quackery and boost the confidence and morale of teachers.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Abdulrasheed Na'Allah, said quality of education cannot improve without quality teachers.

Represented by Coordinator, Academics to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Saka Mahmoud, the vice chancellor said the university would always comply with rules stipulated by the NUC and TRCN.

Also speaking, Provost of the College of Education, Professor Mohammed Gambari who noted that some teachers teach without the requisite professional training, warned that quality teaching should not be compromised.
