Senate Presidency: Saraki to pick Ndume as deputy
Indications have emerged that Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki who is aspiring for the Senate presidency has decided to pitch tent with Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume for the position of deputy Senate president.
Sources close to Saraki told our reporter that the group drumming support for the candidature of the former Kwara State governor under the auspices of the "Like Mind Senators" has endorsed Ndume to run as Saraki's deputy.
Ndume, who hails from Borno State, is among the 35 APC senators that endorsed Saraki as Senate President on Saturday.
Until now, Ndume has been a contender for the post of the Senate President but a ranking senator in Saraki's group who does not want to be named because he was not authorized to speak on the matter said already, "the group known as the Like Mind Senators have settled for the Saraki/Ndume ticket."
Sources say Senators Mohammed Danjuma Goje and Senators-elect Usman Bayero Nafada and Binta Masi Garba are also interested in the deputy Senate presidency. The Like Mind Senators led by senator-elect from Kogi State Dino Melaye had on Saturday in Abuja addressed a press conference where they endorsed Saraki for election into the office of the Senate President with Ndume, Goje, Nafada and Garba in attendance.
Melaye had announced that the group has zoned the position of the deputy Senate president to the North-East where Ndume comes from. A different group, the Senate Unity Forum, led by Senator Barnabas Gemade, had on Saturday given its support to Senator Ahmad Lawan from Yobe State and George Akume from Benue State as Senate president and deputy Senate president. The 8th National Assembly will be inaugurated on June 9.
