Buhari - Lagos-Maiduguri Trekker Arrives Ilorin
Hassan Umar, a 36-year old Nigerian trekking from Lagos to Maiduguri in celebration of the victory of General Mohammadu Buhari, the President-elect, arrived Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on Tuesday to continue his journey.
He said he commenced the long distance journey in fulfillment of his promise that he would embark on the trip if Buhari, the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), won the election.
The keenly contested election was won by Buhari who will be sworn-in on May 29 as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed forces.
It would be recalled that Sulaiman Hassim had embarked on a similar trip, trekking from Lagos to Abuja in fulfillment of his promise to celebrate Buhari's victory.
Daily Trust gathered that the latest trekker who hails from Maiduguri arrived Ilorin on Monday night. He started the journey on Friday May 1.
Umar who visited the state broadcasting corporation (Radio Kwara) before proceeding with the trip stated that he embarked on the journey not for pecuniary gain but to rejoice with General Buhari whom he described as a man of the masses.
The trekker, who has been working with a construction firm, Shelter Care Company, in Lagos since 2005, said he started living in Lagos in 2000.
He disclosed that he voted at the same polling unit where vice-president-elect, Professor Yemi Osinbajo cast his ballot in Lagos.
He said: "I am very happy for Baba's election. The incoming president (Buhari) is a man of the masses. I'm very happy for him. He made us proud as youths.
"And this is why I have embarked on this journey. For me, my own mission is that I want to do something very hard and unusual like others who are still on the road or have completed their journey for people to ask me why I have done that. And I know that by May 29, every one of us must have ended the Buhari victory treks. Even (if) we did not gain anything at the end of the day, what we know is that we have achieved something with this trek".
