aw students of the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) have been rated the best in Nigeria by the Council of Legal Education.

The recognition came following the cumulative performance of UNILORIN students in the August 2014 Bar Final Examinations of the Nigerian Law School.

The Council announced the ratings in the report of the ad-hoc committee it set up to assess students' performance.

Headed by the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, the committee had Prof. J. A. M. Audi, representative of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA); Prof. E. S. Olarinde, Provost, College of Law, Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti; Dr. Y. M. Yusuf, the Dean of Law, University of Maiduguri; Mr. Emeka Obegolu, representative of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA); Prof. M. O. U. Accordinf to the ratings, coming second behind UNILORIN is the University of Lagos (UNILAG), followed by the University of Ibadan (UI), and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in the third and fourth positions respectively while the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) and Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) share the fifth spot.

UNILORIN came second in the 2012 and 2013 Bar Final Examinations.

The committee noted in the report that the "inability of various Faculties of Law to have uninterrupted academic activities in a semester... contributed to the declining standards" which affected their performance in the exams.

"In a bid to meet the Nigerian Law School calendar, some Faculties of Law abridged their programme to compensate for incessant strikes and other disruptions," it stated.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, described the feat as monumental.

He called for similar rating exercise across other faculties in Nigerian Universities.
