PDP intensifies moves on Kwara, other APC deputies

Date: 2015-03-25

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified moves to get opposition deputy governors into its fold.

Sources told Daily Trust correspondents that the PDP has intensified moves to get deputy governors of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) into its fold having succeeded in Rivers State.

Five PDP governors, Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers and Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara defected to APC in 2013.

Apart from the Kano deputy governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and his Kwara State counterpart who are still members of APC, the three others are now in the PDP.

Only on Sunday, Rivers State Deputy Governor Engr Tele Ikuru succumbed to pressure and dumped the APC for the PDP, after following Amaechi to APC.

The PDP had equally succeeded in getting Nasarawa State Deputy Governor Damishi Barau Luka into its fold despite the fact that he and Governor Al-Makura were elected on the platform of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC).

Barrister Mukhtar Shagari, Sokoto State deputy governor failed to follow his principal Wamakko to the APC and is still an ardent member of the PDP.

But Daily Trust learnt that the PDP is currently making frantic efforts to get the deputy governor of Kwara State, Elder Peter Kishira, to defect to the party before the April 11 governorship elections.

There were speculations last week that Kishira had dumped the APC for the PDP, but the deputy governor refuted the claim on Sunday.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Timothy Nathaniel said the rumour existed only in the imagination of those spreading it.

However, a source within the PDP told Daily Trust that the PDP has mapped out strategies to woo deputy governors of the APC controlled states.

Similarly, the deputy governor of Borno State, Alhaji Zanna Umar Mustapha, was said to have been approached last year to team up with the former governor of the state, Ali Modu Sheriff. The move failed to yield positive results as Mustapha later reconciled with Governor Kashim Shettima, leaving only Sheriff who joined the PDP.

Daily Trust gathered that there was an attempt to also get the deputy governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere, to join the PDP which did not succeed.
