Elections: CAN denies working for any politician, party

Date: 2015-03-25

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Kwara State chapter, has declared that it is 'unholy' for anyone to accuse its group of endorsing any political party or its candidate in the forthcoming election.

CAN, in a statement issued in Ilorin on Tuesday, said its seminar of March 6 was never to get involved in politics, adding that it is not supporting any candidate.

The group was recently 'roped' following the claims by governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and a Borno-based Pastor, Musa Kallamu, that it received over N6bn from President Jonathan to rubbish his main contender, Gen. Muhammadu Buhai in the coming election.

The statement signed by the state CAN chairman, Prof. Timothy Opoola, and Secretary, Revd Reuben Ibitoye, called on Christians to remain calm and continue to push for the unity and progress of the nation Nigeria.

It however, refuted media reports that the body was planning to cause religious crisis in the state.

The Christian body added, "It is alleged that Kwara CAN is against a political party and its standard bearer and that Christians want to initiate religious conflicts in the state. While Kwara CAN has pending issues with the state government, the seminar was not organised as a result of such issues.

"Our intention, by organising the seminar, was never to get involved in politics. The focus was the survival and sustenance of the church, while the objective is the security consciousness of the entire Christians in the state."
