Kwara Utd bridge gap on NPFL leaders
Kwara United fought back on Saturday to earn a point at Wikki Tourists to cut the lead of FC Taraba at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League [NPFL] standings to one point.
The Harmony Boys made three changes to their starting team that defeated El-Kanemi last weekend. Isiaka Oladuntoye, Emmanuel Eviemere and ex-Wikki Tourists striker Ibrahim Babale got the nod to start ahead of Peter Gabriel as well as the Gata brothers, Adeshina and Ismaila.
Wikki also made three changes to the side that lost at Nasarawa United with Emeka Nwabula. Victor Yakubu and Harrison Madu in place of Babangida Yusuf, Mathias Samuel and Abbas Hussein.
The Tourists pegged back Kwara United in the early minutes of the game with Victor Yakubu planting a header at goal but Ismail Shagari in goal for United saved.
In the 17th minute, Nura Mohammed came close to handing Wikki the lead when his direct free kick crashed against the woodwork with Kwara United goalkeeper Shagari well-beaten.
Wikki continued to press high up against KWara United with Yakubu, Uche Martins and Idris Guda in the forefront of squeezing life out of the Kwara United defence
Shamman Tanze was not left out as his nimble footwork often dragged four or five KWara United to himself creating space for his teammates.
But all of Wikki's attacking threat produced nothing as Kwara United held on to a goalless scoreline into the break.
The second half started off on same momentum with Tanze blowing two one-on-one chances when he should have given Wikki the lead.
Wikki took the lead inside the last 20 minutes from the spot after Martins' shot was handled by a Kwara United player in his own box. Emenike Onuoha stepped up and converted from 12 yards.
Four minutes to time, Kwara United levelled matters. Segun Alebiosu scored the equaliser from Evans Iyoro's assist to make sure Kwara United remain one of the nine clubs still preserving their unbeaten start to the season.
Kwara United now have five points from three matches while FC Taraba who play hosts to Lobi Stars on Sunday, have six from two games.
Sharks secured a 1-0 win over Akwa United at the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt to move into fifth place.
Yusuf Jaiyeola bundled home the winner just 10 minutes into the match from a rebound after Akwa United could not clear their lines from Fortune Omoniwari's free kick.
