INEC to use only Youth Corps members as ad hoc staff in Kwara
Onucheyo made the call on Saturday in Ilorin in a release signed by INEC Head of Voters Education and Publicity, Mr Jacob Ayanda.
The Commissioner said he has just completed the tour of the 16 local government areas of the state to ensure adequate preparation for the elections.
According to him, the decision to engage only Youth Corps members was to ensure credibility of the elections and remove partisanship of ad hoc staff.
Dr Onucheyo therefore called on stakeholders in the state to ensure the security of Youth Corps members during the coming general elections.
The REC said the tour afforded him the opportunity to have on the spot assessment of men and materials for a successful and hitch free election.
Dr Onucheyo also said the tour made him to understand the environment, challenges and terrain of each of the 16 local government areas of the state.
According to him, this would enable him to take informed decisions on issues affecting logistics, easy delivery of election materials and quick receipt of election results.
“I don’t want to be an armed chair Resident Electoral Commissioner, I believe in moving to the field to feel how they feel and sleep how they sleep,” Dr Onucheyo added.
The REC said the tour of the local government has equipped to understand how to properly fix issues and all other related matters to the elections.
He said the commission has signed Memorandum of understanding with National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for effective logistics during the elections.
He advised Committee on election security to see INEC as the centre referee holding the whistle while other critical partners act as line referees who must be adequately carried along.
The REC therefore appealed for cooperation, understanding and adequate protection of Corps members, other INEC officials and INEC installations and materials.
He also charged INEC staff to be up and doing and careful during the election and voting periods.
Onucheyo charged all INEC staff to resist any temptation from any quarter especially from politicians.
“With the sophistication INEC is introducing into election system now, it will be foolhardy of any staff to promise any form of assistance to any politician at this time,” he said.
