Protest hits Kwara Poly over non-inclusion of applicants' names in admission list
Young men and women who were applicants seeking admission into the Kwara state polytechnic besieged the gate and attempted to mount road blocks in the early hours of Wednesday to protest the non-inclusion of their names in the admission list for 2014/2015 session.
It took the combined efforts of the Nigerian Police, State Security Service, the school security and other security operatives to quell what would have resulted into a full-blown riot.
The SUG executives and the Directorate of Students' Services also joined the security operatives in an attempt to avoid traffic jam on the old Jebba highway.
Meanwhile, the SUG executives have restated their commitment in sustaining peace on the campuses.
The SUG added that they have no problem with the Authority and that the alleged applicants have gone too far by the attempt to disrupt the smooth running of the Polytechnic and the peace of the neighbouring communities.
It will be recalled that over 51, 000 applicants are seeking admission into the polytechnic in the current session, although, the school has a carrying capacity as prescribed by NBTE which the Council and the Management strictly adhere to.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Publications Division Moshood Amuda , appealed for understanding of students, parents guardians, applicants and the public.
"The Authority of the Polytechnic has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and conducive environment for learning, while following strictly the guidelines from the regulatory bodies like JAMB, NBTE, NYSC, among others." he said .
