Abdulraheem resigns to run for Kwara governor

Date: 2014-10-17

There is mixed feeling in Ilorin, Kwara State, following the resignation of Professor Shuaib Abdulraheem as chairman of Federal Character Commission (FCC) to vie for the 2015 governorship election.

Abdulraheem on Wednesday picked his nomination form at the national secretariat of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja with the money he said was raised for him by "beneficiaries of his benefaction".

He is the first among the 14 PDP aspirants to have bought the form while 10 others have only bought expression of interest form at the state secretariat of the PDP.

Those who have bought the expression of interest form, according to findings by Daily Trust, include Dele Belgore, Gbemisola Rukayyat Saraki, Simeon Ajibola, Mokanjuola Ajadi, Jani Ibrahim, Sunday Babalola, John Dara, Folorunsho Ayinla, among others.

The resignation of Abdulraheem from the FCC where he just commenced another term of five years came as a shock to some Ilorin indigenes but his loyalists and supporters hailed the decision.

Speaking with Daily Trust correspondent, chairman of PDP in Ilorin West Local Government, Alhaji Amuda Olugbon noted that Abdulraheem's performance at FCC could be replicated if given the opportunity to govern the state.

He however said the people would decide the best among the array of aspirants jostling to rule the state.

The university don who is also the Talba of Ilorin resigned on Tuesday.

This would be the second time Abdulraheem would be resigning from the FCC to contest the governorship election.
