His death was announced in a statement signed by the party's Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari.

The statement reads: "It is with heavy heart of grief and loss that we announce the death of our general secretary, Prince Yemi Afolayan.

"Prince Yemi Afolayan passed away this morning after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the family.

"We empathise with his immediate family in this moment of grief and we urge them to find solace in the fact that Prince Yemi Afolayan lived an impacful life.

"He will be remembered for his unflinching loyalty to the APC, contribution to the development of Kwara State as a parliamentarian and his huge contribution to humanity and mankind.

"Indeed, Kwara State has lost a worthy son. We pray for the repose of his soul and we empathise with his entire family, all APC members and the people of Kwara State."
