Kwara Utd coach disappointed with team’s position

Date: 2012-07-13

Coach Tunde Sanni of Kwara United FC of Ilorin has expressed disappointment that he could not take the team to the desired level, as the 2011/2012 season draws to an end.

Sanni, who made the assertion on Thursday in Ilorin, said his ambition was to take the team to a continental tournament.

Kwara United are currently in the 13th position on the log, with 46 points from 34 games, and only four matches to the end of the season. The coach said that though this was his first experience as a coach in the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), he wanted to achieve a lot for the club.

"This wasn't what I aimed at this season, but as it has happened this way, there is nothing I can do than to thank God," Sanni said.

"This is my first experience and I hope to learn from my mistake; this is what I believe in."

On the reasons for the club’s current standing in the league, the coach said their banishment from home turf, which followed their ill-fated week 12 game with Sunshine Stars of Akure in Ilorin, contributed a lot.

"After that game, we had to play about six games away from home--which is very difficult. When you look at the trend of this team, anytime it is carried away from home, it is always a problem. But we thank God we were banished but nothing is wrong with us, we are still in the league, we thank God for that," the coach said.

Sanni pleaded with the club's fans to desist from causing trouble, explaining that a game was not won or lost until the final whistle.

"I have seen a game being won in the last minute. Sharks beat us in the last seconds in our first-leg game in Port Harcourt. The referee just wanted to see the end of the game and the ball was in the net and that was how we lost 0-1 in Port Harcourt," said Sanni.
He urged fans to be patient until the last whistle, saying “that is when one can say the game was won or lost."
