Don cautions FG on foreign intervention
A Professor of Political Science and International Relations, Hassan Salihu, has advised the Federal Government to guard against an unfavourable aftermath as it welcomes foreign powers in the fight against insurgency in the country.
Salihu gave the advice in a paper he delivered at a round-table on “Peace and Security” held in honour of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State by the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday.
He said though the intervention by the foreign powers is desirable in view of the extent of the insurgency in the country at present, the government should be cautious about the intervention to ensure that the country does not suffer any negative impact from it now or in future.
The University of Ilorin lecturer, who said an aid by American government during Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration seemed to have led to a number of casualties in the Nigeria Army, warned that government should not take a rash decision on the intervention from the foreign nations.
Saliu who said that the government has not been able to do a credible threat analysis challenged the government to take bold steps by coming up with initiative that would solve the problem.
Also speaking, the chairman of the occasion, Shehu Jimoh, called on Nigeria leaders to rule with fear of God and urged families and other agents of socialisation to impart in the young ones the moral values that aid development of the society.
Jimoh, a retired professor of Educational Psychology expressed belief that there would be peace if leaders rule with fear of God and moral values restored in the society.
Governor Ahmed who was represented on the occasion by his Special Assistant on Information, Deji Oni, identified security as all inclusive business, pointing out that peace and tranquillity depend on the people that made up the nation.
In his welcome address, the chairman, State council of NUJ, Comrade Abiodun Abdulkareem, said the event was organised to assess the security challenges confronting the nation and offer solution to the problem.
