Aregbesola Highlights Danger Of Boko Haram To Girl-Child Education
Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has alerted the nation of the danger which Boko Haram campaign portends for education, especially the girl-child education.
Aregbesola, who condemned the campaign by the Boko Haram against education and female involvement, described it as totally misplaced.
The governor made his position known in a lecture he delivered at the 10th Mosobalaje Oyawoye Faculty of Science Endowed lecture at the University of Ilorin.
The governor's lecture was titled, "Revitalising Education In Nigeria: The Osun State Example."
The governor posited that the insurgents campaign against Western education has no basis in any of the Prophet of Islam's teachings.
Aregbesola, who said the campaign of Boko Haram is purely a misguided mission, added that the insurgent group must "be stoutly countered with all gravitas.
"The group itself must be pulverised because of the sorrow it causes in homes and deprivation it makes some children to suffer with respect to education," he said.
Speaking to the topic of the lecture, the governor said Nigeria must first acknowledge that there was a problem with the nation's system of education at all levels to be able to reclaim the value of education and stem the tide of its regressing standard.
The governor, who said education was one of those sacrosanct areas of our national life, added that, "we do not have to play politics with it. It is a space that must not be violated with half-truths or complete untruths."
He also identified an alarming regression in the quality and standard of education in the primary school education system, adding that a recent UNESCO report indicated that there is about 10.5 million out-of-school children, adding that it is a marked evidence of the country's failure to regard education as a primary objective.
He also said there should be culture of a fruitful liaison between higher institutions of learning in the country and the larger society, adding that the larger human society must strongly feel the presence and essence of the higher citadel of learning in existence.
