Abduction of Students: Muslim Women Stage Protest in Ilorin

Date: 2014-04-23

The women wing of the Nasrul-lahi Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT), Kwara State chapter, Tuesday staged a peaceful protest against the abduction of over 200 female students of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, and other acts of violence by insurgents in some parts of the country.

Members of the society said their hearts bleed in view of the pains and agonies the families of the abducted school children are facing.

The leader of the women group, Hajia Ummuani Abdulrahaman, said the activities of the insurgents, particularly the bomb blast at Nyanya, Abuja, and the abduction of the female students called for concern by all stakeholders in the country, irrespective of their religious and political differences.

Abdulrahaman, who presented a letter of protest to the state Governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, for owned transmission to President Goodluck Jonathan, said: "Our hearts are bleeding. We are mothers. We know what it takes to lose a pregnancy how much more a child."

She however pleaded that: "We want these children to be recovered because they are our futures. They are what we depend on as mothers."

The NASFAT women leader, who said as mothers, they felt the agonies of the mothers of the abducted girls, noted that the activities of the insurgents had gone beyond religious affiliations.

She added that people of all religious faiths must come together to tackle the onslaught of the insurgents, especially the violence against women in different forms.

In his response, Ahmed commended the women for being part of the vanguard to tackle the activities of insurgents in the country.

The governor described the insurgents' activities as a test for Nigerians' faith in the country, adding that everybody must be security conscious.

"The success of the current pursuit of peace by security agencies will require every hand to be on deck. Information is very important. We must see ourselves as each others keepers to live in peace", he said.

The governor promised to deliver the message of the women to President Jonathan with an expectation that the presidency will give Nigerians confidence that the prevailing security challenges would be brought under control.
