Date: 2014-03-14

A truck-driver, Afolabi Gafar, has been arraigned before an Ilorin chief magistrate's court for allegedly killing a National Youth Service Corps member, Fatima Feyipitan, and a teacher, David Adeleye.

Feyipitan had been deployed to the Government Secondary School (GSS), Bode-Saadu, headquarters of Moro local government area of Kwara State, before she met her untimely death. Adeleye, the teacher, was a staff of the school.

According to the police first information report (FIR), the accused, a resident of Idi-Igba area, Offa Garage, Ilorin, on February 20, 2014 at about 1:30pm, drove his Mercedes Benz truck with registration number Lagos APP 525 XA, along the Share/Oke-Oyi Road, where he had a head-on collision with an oncoming Toyota Carina 'E' which had both deceased individuals as its sole passengers.

He was arraigned on a two-count charge of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to produce vehicle particulars on demand by the police, contrary to sections 23 and 19, respectively, of the Road Traffic Law and Road Traffic Regulation.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Nasiru Yusuf, objected to the bail of the accused on the ground that he might jump bail, knowing the gravity of the offence he has been charged with.

Chief Magistrate Muhammed Ibrahim, however, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties who must be residing within the court's jurisdiction.

The case was adjourned to April 1, 2014 for further hearing.
