Victoria Setubal Honour Yekini

Date: 2012-05-08

Vitoria Setubal have given the ultimate honour to the late Rashidi Yekini, who was one of the Portuguese club's biggest stars in the 1990s.

The Nigeria legend died aged 48 on Friday after a brief illness and was buried on Saturday.
Yekini played for Setubal  between 1990 and 1994 and in the 1996/1997 season.

In honour of the star striker who scored 93 goals in 122 matches for them, Setubal  paid a glowing tribute to Yekini on their official website, describing him as one of the club's 'most beloved players'.

Vitoria Setubal's website also revealed that the club's flag has been flying at half-mast in recognition of Yekini's contribution to the club and memory of his death, while the club also made a request to the Portuguese FA to observe a minute of silence during one of their games.

In condolence with Yekini's family, the Setubal website wrote: "To the bereaved family, the Victoria FC sends its heartfelt condolences and solidarity with the pain of relatives and friends."

Yekini was the Portuguese top-flight's top scorer with 21 goals in 1993/1994, the season he was named the African Footballer of the Year.
