Ilorin 2013: NSSF targets talent pooling
President of the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF), Ibrahim Muhammad, has described the ongoing 6th National School Sports Festival as another platform to harness the enormous talent that abounds in the country.
Muhammad, who spoke at the weekend at the opening ceremony of the one-week competition holding in Ilorin, the Kwara State, remarked that the history of school sports was enriched with exploits of stars who were discovered before becoming international stars.
"There is no doubt that the ten days of this "kiddies Olympics" will enable the participants the opportunity to showcase their talent," he said, even as he commended Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for his support.
"When athletes are discovered at a tender age, there is a tendency for them to grow in the said sports as obtained in other countries who discover, groom and develop athletes".
Muhammad urged the ministries of Education and Sports to collaborate with a view to ensuring that the average Nigerian child enjoys proper development.
Host Kwara began its campaign in the boys' U-13 football event on a winning note after beating Rivers 3-2.
Football and athletics have been scheduled to hold at the main bowl of the Ilorin Township Stadium while the University of Ilorin will be hosting the handball, gymnastic, judo, karate and taekwondo.
The outdoor sports hall will host the basketball and volleyball event, while the stadium complex will host rugby and baseball/softball as dart and scrabble will be held at the Conference Hall and Dart Hall of the stadium.
Abula, swimming, tennis and table tennis will all be held at the stadium, while cricket will take place at the Kwara Football Academy ground and the Fives is slated for the Squash Court.
