Ijaiya hangs up his boots

Date: 2013-10-22

Kwara United skipper, Lukman Ijaiya has hung up his boots after 15 years of active football, supersport.com reports.

The erstwhile 3SC striker revealed to supersport.com on Tuesday in Ilorin that he is done with football and would move on with his career.

Sadly for the 35-year-old former Offa United star, his last game for the Afonja Warriors was the 1-1 draw against Akwa United on Sunday which got them demoted to the second tier of the Nigeria football.

"I'm grateful to God for sparing my life up to this time even with all the difficulties I have faced in football.

"Although it's painful to quit now, but I just have to end it here and go back to school as I would never play football for the rest of my life," Ijaiya said to supersport.com in tears.

Ijaiya started his football career with Offa United in 1996 after completing his secondary school at Tawakalitu Grammar School in Offa.

He spent four seasons with Kwara United and he is unhappy that the Afonja Warriors have lost their premier League status after the outgone season.

Ijaiya then wished Kwara United well in their campaign next season in the National League.

"Very unfortunate that Kwara United have been relegated, but I am sure they would come back to the top flight next year," Ijaiya concluded sadly.
