NBA Appeals to FG to Stem Spate of Kidnapping
The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Tuesday appealed to the federal government to curb the incessant kidnapping in the country rather than being distracted by 2015 general election and intra-party wrangling.
The Chairman of NBA, Ilorin branch, Kwara State, Mr. Rafiu Balogun, made the appeal in Ilorin on Tuesday while speaking with journalists on the forthcoming formal presentation of a book written in honour of a retired President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Issa Ayo Salami.
The book will be presented to the public September 19 at the University of Ilorin main auditorium.
According to Balogun, "It is worrisome that no part of the country is now free from reported cases of all forms of crimes," saying the development was due to lack of good governance on the part of the leaders in the country.
He added: "In a country where there are job opportunities for its teeming youths, there will be low note crimes as people will focus on their works and contribute their quota towards the socio economic development of the country, but here in Nigeria, the reverse is the case.
"An idle mind is the devil workshop and this has culminated in what Nigeria is facing now as many youths are indulging in various forms of crimes in order to make both ends meet."
Balogun said: "I am worried by the spate of kidnapping in this country. It has assumed a very dangerous dimension. The sporadic kidnapping of Nigerians and foreigners and particularly Justice of the Supreme Court and lawyers is a demonstration of the height of the menace of the crime."
He therefore called on the federal government to tackle the menace head on and return to the drawing board on the issue of security of lives and property.
On the public presentation of Justice Salami's book, the chairman said: "Ilorin NBA has chosen Salami not because he is one of us, but because of what he stands for as a jurist of impeccable integrity who is noted for his incorruptibility and erudition.
"He is a man that believes in the adherence to the rule of law and the application of the law no matter whose ox is gored, and he is not prepared to be compromised."
Balogun therefore called on Nigerians to emulate his (Salami) attributes so as to move the nation forward.
