Legal Aids Council Moves To Decongest Prisons
Plans are underway to install soft ware's in the offices of the Director of Pubic prosecution (DPP) and the office of the Attorneys-General to fast track treatment of bulk case files.
The Director-General of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, Mrs Joy Bob-Manuel, who disclosed this in Ilorin, the Kwara Sate Capital, said that this was part of measures being put in place to ensure quick dispensation of justice as well as decongest prisons in the country.
She said that her agency was collaborating with the judiciary and the police in decongesting prisons in the country and fast tracking proceedings in the courts.
Bob-Manuel lamented the obsolete condition of most Nigerian prisons and hailed plans by the federal government to build new prisons, expand and relocate the old ones to better sites.
While answering questions in "Playing Host" a Radio Kwara Personality Interview Programme she decried a situation whereby suspects languish in prison custody for several years because of their inability to contract lawyers to defend them in courts over minor offences, thereby further congest the prisons.
Bob-Manuel who spoke on a radio programme identified inadequate funding as one of the greatest challenge facing her agency and called on State governments to come to its aid by employing more lawyers to offer free legal services to indigent suspects.
