Shot Kwara Poly Student recovering - Rector
Rector of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Alhaji Mas'ud Elelu, said yesterday that a student of the polytechnic, Ahmed Dayo, who was shot in June is recovering.
The Rector, who was corroborated by chairman of council of the polytechnic, Professor Shehu Jimoh, expressed regret that the student was reported to have passed away when he was actually alive. He lamented that it was the report that aggravated the protest by the students.
The 200 level student was in June mistakenly shot in the leg by a police Corporal.
While briefing newsmen on the meeting the Council of Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education (COHEADS) to be hosted by the polytechnic next week, Elelu added that the hospital bill of the student was covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) which he said the polytechnic instituted for its students.
According to him, the polytechnic also spent N50, 000 weekly for six weeks to take care of the victim's feeding as recommended by the authorities of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).
He advised journalists to always verify their facts before going to press to avoid causing crisis in the society, noting that the protest would have been minimal if the shot student had not been reported to have died.
On the COHEADS' meeting, he said 61 members would converge on the polytechnic to deliberate on improving quality and standard of technical education in the country
