Proprietor of Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Football Club of Ilorin, Senator Bukola Saraki has pledged to support the development of sports at grassroots level.

Saraki, who was speaking at the presentation of the Special Merit Award on him by the Association of Professional Footballers of Nigeria, APFON, for ABS being the only club in Nigeria not indebted to its players as well as for its special concern for the welfare and future of its players, said he would continue to initiate programmes that would encourage the development of sports at the grassroots level.

The ex-Kwara State governor, who expressed delight at the feat recorded by the Club, commended the management, players and their handlers exhibiting high level discipline, professionalism and efficiency in their matches, with regards to the security of match officials and opposing teams.  While, pledging to prioritize the welfare of the team, Saraki assured that the administration of the club will always be done in conformity with the international standards.

Also speaking at the occasion, President of Nigeria Referees Association, NRA, Alhaji Ahmed Maude said reports in the Association's secretariat indicate that no referee has been insulted or manhandled in all ABS FC home matches. He commended the club and urged others to emulate it.

Earlier in his speech, APFON Secretary, Mr Austin Popo while praised the club for the show of professionalism and for giving priority to the welfare of its players.

Reacting to the award, ABS General Manager, Mr Alloy Chukwuemeka, said the award is a clear indication that the vision of Saraki to make the club a model for other clubs in the country to emulate has started materialising.
