Insecurity: Experts urge FG to address porous borders

Date: 2013-06-21

The Federal Government and its security apparatus have been urged to address the nation's porous borders and illegal importation of arms and ammunition to prevent the country from becoming a failed state.

Participants at a conference on 'National security and development in contemporary Nigeria,' in a communiqué obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday also urged government to discourage criminality by ensuring ready access to the basic necessities of life.

They added that government should provide stipends to unemployed youths in Nigeria.

The communiqué was signed by Dr. Lateef Oladimeji, Prof. Gabriel Anaeto and Prof. I.B. Bello-Imam while the conference was organised by the College of Humanities, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin.

The participants, made up of legal practitioners and the academia, said the judiciary should ensure fairness and firmness in the dispensation of justice, especially on corruption and corruption-related cases in order to prevent pervasion of justice in Nigeria.

They also urged Nigerians to be free to discuss and decide the way forward on the issues of constitutional amendments, federalism versus confederalism as well as the state police. These, they noted, had implications for national security.
