Don Faults FG on Appointment of Heads of Agencies
Professor of Physics at the Department of Physics, University of Ilorin, Professor Isaac Abiodun Adimula has faulted the manner in which Federal Government appointed head of Federal Agencies based on political affiliation.
Adimula suggested that the head of agencies like NIGCOMSAT,NASRDA and National Mathematical Centre should be experts, Scientists who are professional to ensure effective performances.
Delivering the 129th inaugural lecture entitled “The Mandate: The Radio as an Instrument of dominion”, Adimula said government should not treat electricity as a luxury.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has established National Space Research and Development Agency, NASRDA and Nigerian Communications Satellite NIGCOMSAT and National Mathematical Centre NMC these are developments in the right directions and therefore competent scientist with proven records should head these agencies. The matter of space and radio should be above mere political considerations.
“There must be improved welfare and infrastructures for secondary school teachers in the sciences. Teaching of the sciences should be experimentally based. In line with this, there is need for a general overhaul of the sciences curricular in the secondary schools, Polytechnics and the universities.
“University curricula should be developed in conjunction with relevant industries, local communities and stakeholders. A situation where somebody generalizes curricular for all Nigerian Universities cannot hold in this age if there will be an accelerated match towards growth and development.
The University don advised federal government to ensure that 10 percent of the society’s population should be innovative while others take cues from this 10%.
This Innovation and merit, he said, should not be compromised for whatever reasons to this group while government and leaders must urgently harness this group and make them productive.
