Kwara Police Deny Shooting Motorcyclist at Oyun Bridge
The Kwara State Police Command has denied reports that its officers shot a motorcyclist during an incident at Oyun Bridge in Ilorin.
The Command, in a statement issued by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said a video circulating on social media had been accompanied by claims that the motorcyclist was shot by police personnel.
The police clarified that no person was shot in the incident, which occurred during routine patrol and stop-and-search operations around Oyun Bridge.
According to the Command, 23-year-old Abdurasaq Lukman, who was riding his motorcycle at top speed, knocked down Corporal Saka Azeez, one of the officers on duty.
The impact, it said, left the police officer with serious head injuries and a fracture, while Lukman sustained minor injuries.
Other officers at the scene immediately intervened and conveyed both the injured officer and the motorcyclist to a medical facility for treatment.
The police said Lukman was treated and discharged and is currently in police custody, where he is assisting with investigations.
Corporal Azeez, however, remains under medical care and requires further examination and scans to determine the full extent of his head injuries.
The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Ojo Adekimi, urged members of the public to exercise caution when sharing unverified information.
The Command said verifying information before circulating it was necessary to prevent unnecessary anxiety and misunderstanding, while acknowledging citizens' concerns about police activities.
