Unilorin Expert Develops AI System for African ECG Interpretation
A medical expert from the University of Ilorin, Professor Ibraheem Katibi has announced that an indigenous artificial intelligence system capable of accurately interpreting electrocardiogram (ECG) readings for African patients is now fully developed and undergoing final validation.
The innovation, led by Katibi in his capacity as Director of the Central Research Laboratories and former Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, addresses a critical diagnostic gap caused by reliance on ECG machines calibrated primarily for Caucasian populations.
Speaking to journalists in Ilorin, Professor Katibi explained that years of comparative research involving African, British, Indian, and Chinese subjects revealed significant physiological differences in cardiac electrical patterns between Africans and other ethnic groups.
He warned that using imported devices without African-specific calibration often produces misleading results, potentially leading to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment, and avoidable patient harm.
The new AI-powered system, trained on extensive African ECG data, promises to deliver precise, population-specific interpretations, marking a major advancement in cardiovascular care across the continent.
