Six Remanded for Possessing Firearms
Six suspected cultists who were arrested for alleged involvment in the secret cult activities within Kwara State have been arraigned before an Ilorin Chief Magistrate court.
The suspected cultists were said to have been found in possession of a gun, charms and other dangerous weapons.
The accused are Collins Oluwatobi Oladunjoye aka Slimzy, a 300-Level Department of Religions and Comparative Studies, -Usman Abubakar, aka Cobra, a 100-Level Department of History Education and Opeyemi Olasunkanmi Akanji, an extra year student of Department of Mathematics.
Others are Abdulrasheed Onifade, aka Cypher, an extra year student of Department of Economic Education, Adebayo Akinlabi Ijidakinro, a 300-Level Department of Computer Science all of students of University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara State, and one Moses Shuaib said to be the gang herbalist.
They were brought before the court on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, belonging to secret society and illegal possession of firearms.
The offences contradict Sections 97 of Penal Code, 11 of the Secret Cult and Secret Societies I Education Institutions (Prohibition) Law Cap S3, Laws of Kwara State and 3(1) of the Robbery and Firearms Act CAP R11, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The long arm of the law caught up with the accused following the arrest of a notorious cultist, Olumoh Olatunbosun Aliyu, by the operatives of the State Security Services on January 15, and his subsequent arraignment before Magistrate B.A. Baraje.
The said Olumoh was said to have confessed to his mates and activities within Ilorin and its environs which led to the apprehension of other members of Eiye Confraternity, otherwise known as "Black Axe" on January 28.
Items allegedly recovered from the accused are a large box of various criminal charms, four cutlasses and a locally made long range dane gun.
First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that investigation conducted at the Kwara State Command of the State Security Service (SSS) revealed that the accused are members of Aiye Confraternity otherwise known as "Black Axe" contrary to the law.
The prosecutor, Barrister J.A. Mumini, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Kwara State objected to the bail of the accused and urged the court to remand them at the SSS custody to enable them continue further investigation on how to apprehend other members of the gang at large.
The presiding judge, Chief Magistrate Nurudeen Adeyanju granted the oral application of the prosecutor, as he ordered that the accused be remanded at the SSS custody until February 28 when the matter would come up again for further mention.
