IEYDA Urges Immediate Government Intervention Over Deadly Okoolowo Expressway Accidents
Youths from Ilorin, under the Ilorin Emirate Youths Development Association (IEYDA), conducted a visit to Okoolowo Expressway to demand urgent government action, including the construction of a flyover, as part of ongoing advocacy to prevent further loss of lives.
Speaking to journalists during the visit, IEYDA President Alhaji Muhammad Uthman Jagunmo revealed that the association had previously written to the Presidency, the Minister of Works, and the National Assembly to highlight the recurring road accidents at the Okoolowo axis, which claim lives almost weekly.
Just Event Online TV reports, Before coming here, we had written to the Presidency, the Minister of Works, and the National Assembly to inform them about the frequent loss of lives due to incessant accidents. We have also received an acknowledgment letter in response," he said.
The youths also expressed their support for the efforts of key stakeholders including the Kwara State Governor, Senator Saliu Mustapha; Rep. Yinka Aluko; Rep. Muktar Shagaya; and others who have, in one way or another, appealed to the Federal Government for a flyover to be constructed to safeguard lives and property.
Alhaji Bola, the Public Relations Officer of the Okoolowo Joint Community Associations, also spoke during the visit. He commended IEYDA for their resilience and highlighted the broader security concerns affecting the area.
"We appreciate IEYDA for their resilience. I'd like to point out that we are not only facing accidents from vehicles and trailers-at night, thieves also rob commuters. We implore the government to direct transport unions and traders here at Okoolowo to follow road setback rules," he said.
