Kwara Initiative Distributes 3,000 Energy-Saving Stoves to Combat Deforestation
The Kwara Agro-Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (KWACReSAL) initiative has distributed 3,000 energy-saving cooking stoves to women across all 16 local government areas of Kwara State.
This programme aims to promote environmental sustainability, tackle deforestation, and enhance food security. During a ceremony attended by the spouses of local government chairmen, led by Hajiya Ramat AbdulMalik, wife of the Edu Local Government Chairman, the State Project Coordinator, Alhaji Shamsideen Aregbe, highlighted the project's focus on restoring degraded landscapes and fostering a climate-resilient environment.
Alhaji Aregbe explained that the distribution of these energy-efficient stoves is a critical strategy to curb deforestation caused by the extensive felling of trees for firewood. He stressed the severe climate change implications of deforestation and noted that the project is also advocating the use of briquettes—an environmentally friendly alternative to charcoal made from waste materials.
He further assured that the project is closely collaborating with local government chairmen to ensure that the stoves are distributed to deserving women in rural areas.
Alhaji Aregbe reaffirmed the project's commitment to working with the spouses of local government chairmen to build a climate-resilient and healthier environment across the state.
In her remarks, Hajiya Ramat AbdulMalik expressed gratitude to KWACReSAL for its focus on empowering women and pledged to support future collaborations to positively impact the lives of people, especially women, at the grassroots level.
