Flood: Ahmed Wants Dredging, Dike Around River Niger

Date: 2013-01-09

The Kwara state government yesterday suggested that to avoid incessant flood disasters in Nigeria, the Federal Government needs to construct a dike as well as dredge the River Niger to channel the river towards the sea.

The deputy governor of the state, Elder Peter Kisira who stated this during the visit of the Presidential Committee on Flood Relief to victims of last year's floods in the state, said the measure would go a long way to avert series of flood disasters in the country.

"Kwara state is surrounded by the Kainji, Shiroro and Jebba dams. As a result of this, every year, when water comes off these dams, nearby communities have to abandon their residences. This is the experience we have been having for many years.

"That is why we thank Mr. President for giving this special attention to those who are affected by the disaster. We are very grateful for the visit of the Presidential Committee on Disaster and Relief/Rehabilitation.

"It has been suggested that we should relocate our people who are affected by the flood. We know that it is a good one where land is available and where there will be no communal clash as it had been in the past.

Representative of the leader of the team, the Presidential Committee on Disaster and Relief/Rehabilitation, Mr. John Owoicho in his speech, said the committee's visit was to ascertain the level of damage and what the Federal Government could do for the affected victims.
