Kwara LG Workers' Sack: Commission Calls for Dialogue

Date: 2012-12-30

Following the ripples generated by the sack of 123 employees of Ilorin East Local Government Council of Kwara State on Christmas eve, Chairman of Local Government Service Commission, Alhaji Sulaiman Kayode Yusuf, has advised the council chairman and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to dialogue over the issue.

NULGE had protested the retrenchment of permanent employees by the council Chairman Aminat Ishola, describing it as unacceptable.

However, the Chairman on her part claimed that the affected staff were illegal workers discovered by a committee set up by state government, saying some of them got employed through 'the back door'.

Mrs Ishola added that some of the affected workers were working elsewhere and still claiming to be staff of the council. In a telephone interview with Sunday Trust yesterday, the LGSC Chairman Yusuf called for dialogue among the parties to give peace a chance.

It could be recalled that State Chairman of the Congress of Progressive Change (CPC) Alhaji Sulaiman Buhari had in a statement alleged that the sacked workers were being victimized and called on the council Chairman to resign.
