NEMA Seeks Relocation of Kwara Flood Victims

Date: 2012-10-01

The National Emergency Management Agency has called on the Federal Government to relocate the people of the communities affected by floods in Kwara State and then find a lasting solution to the perennial problems.

The Assistant zonal Operations Officer, NEMA, Mr. Slaku Lugard Bijimi, made the call at the weekend during an assessment visit to the affected  communities in Patigi, Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State.

He declared that relocation was the only permanent solution to the ecological disasters in the area, which according to him, has become an annual event.

Bijimi appealed to the Federal Government to proffer a permanent solution to the perennial flooding by extending the dredging of River Niger to Jebba in order to save the area, calling on government to maintain the existing dams.

He appealed to people residing along river banks across the state to relocate, saying that the flood might persist till November according to the earlier prediction by meteorologists.

The Etsu Patigi, Alhaji Ibrahim Chatta Umar, called on Federal and state governments to provide succor for the affected victims in order to put smile on their faces.

The monarch remarked that the level of damage was beyond what people could just overlook.

"The disasters has rendered many homeless, destroyed their properties and submerged their farms", he said.

The Emir called on government at all levels to proffer solution to the yearly problems.

The Senior Special Adviser on Emergency Relief to Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed, Alhaji Musa Abdullahi, sympathized with the victims, assuring them of government support.

Abdullahi remarked that government would not relent in its efforts in putting smiles in the faces of the victims, adding that the government had raised a high-power relief committee to look into the matter.
