Kwara Assembly urges KWSG to restore intra, inter schools sports competitions

As part of efforts at restoring the glory of sports in Kwara State, the State House of Assembly has called on the state government to mandate its ministries of Education, and Youth and Sports Development to come up with robust calendar for sporting activities in primary and post primary schools in the state.

The Resolution followed a Matter of General Public Importance, raised by member representing Essa/Shawo/ Igboidun Constituency, Hon. Hassan Oyeleke, on the "Need for Revival of Sporting Activities in Schools" across the state.

The Deputy Speaker, Chief Mathew Okedare, who presided over the Tuesday's sitting, while reading the resolutions of the House,said the need became expedient to restore the glory of sports development and ensure all round development of the younger generations.

The House equally called on the state Ministry of Education to ensure that all proposed new schools in the state have sporting arena, before approval to ensure that pupils and students across the state participate actively in sports.

Oyeleke had while raising the Matter, recalled how athletes who had done the state and the nation proud in both national and international competitions, were discovered through intra and inter schools competitions in both primary and post primary institutions, in the state.

Other members who spoke on the Matter emphasised the significance of sports and identified the stoppage of training of teachers in Physical Education, as the cause of the dwindling fortune of sports in the state.

They called for political will to encourage training of Physical Education Teachers from elementary stage and restore intra and inter schools competitions, to ensure overall wellbeing of younger generations.

Other members who spoke on the Matter were members representing Oke Ogun,Kaiama/Kemanji/ Wajibe, Irepodun, Share/ Oke Ode and Ekiti Constituencies, Barr. Kamal Fagbemi, Hons. Ahmed Ibn Mohammed, Mathew Babaoye,Jimoh Akanni Abdul Rahman and Mrs Felicia Ebun Owolabi.

Also, a bill for a law to establish the State Hospitals Management Bureau and other related matters, passed through first reading at the floor of the House.
