KWHA Bemoans Lack of Uniform Standard Measure for Agricultural Product
The Kwara state House of Assembly has expressed concern over lack of uniform standard unit for measuring agriculture produce across various local markets in the state.
The House, in a notice of motion titled "Uniform Standard Measures for Measurable Agricultural Produce Sellers in Kwara State: KWHAM 22", moved by the Chief Whip, Hon. Audu Liman Saidu and three other members, said the rate at which farmers were being exploited by traders was worrisome.
The legislators observed that most states in Northern part of the country have widely accepted standard measures for measurable agricultural produces.
Having a uniform standard measure for measurable agricultural produce according to the lawmakers would go a long way in solving exploitative tendencies between buyers and sellers.
The House later adopted the motion with a call on the Ministry of Commerce and Cooperative to as a matter of necessity liaise with sixteen local government councils and relevant stakeholders with a view to designing standard measures for produce sellers across the state.
The lawmakers also called on Ministry of Commerce and Cooperatives to make any agreed standard measure widely available to agric producers and all stakeholders. It equally urged the ministry and all local government areas to ensure adequate sensitization and compliance with the use of standard measures.
Some of the members who spoke in favour of the motion emphasized the need for public enlightenment and enforcement of uniform standard measures.
Meanwhile, the Kwara state motorcycle operations (control, safety etc) (Amendment) Bill, 2012, was read for the first time at the plenary yesterday.
The bill seeks to amend law provided for the operation of motorcycles in the state.
