FG asked to protect girl-child

The Federal Government has been advised to take issue of protection of girl-child serious and ensure that laws prohibiting early child marriage are adequately monitored and implemented.

The advice was given yesterday in Ilorin at a programme organised by the proprietress of Lamp Bearers Islamic School Ilorin, Hajia Mardiyah Bello in collaboration with FOMWAN, on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl-Child. Guest speaker at the occasion, Professor Nimah Abdulraheem, said girl-child education must be given priority with emphasis placed on compulsory free basic education.

Also speaking, the Amirah of FOMWAN, Hajia Memunah Shehu, advised women to empower themselves, saying "If every woman is empowered, alot can be achieved and some of the problems the society is facing today will be minimized. FOMWAN will not relent in it efforts to celebrate the day".

Early, the convener, Hajia Bello, said girls are important to the society and must be educated "even though they are in the kitchen, but can still be useful and relevant in their chosen careers."
